The Galo Resort Hotel Calheta is located on the golden sands of Calheto beach, set against the picturesque backdrop of the lush green Madeiran mountains. This five- floor hotel features 114 air-conditioned guestrooms decorated in modern, Madeiran style with white walls and tiled floors. All open onto balconies with sea or land views, and include cable television, minibars, safes, and hair dryers.
Guests can pamper themselves at the hotel's wellness centre where facilities include a fitness room, indoor pool, Finnish sauna, Turkish steam bath, massage and therapy treatment, outdoor pool, spa bath, and seawater bathing enclosure. The outdoor pool has a separate area for kids, and a bar serving cooling cocktails, or guests can head for the golden sands of Calheta Beach directly in front of the hotel, also with its own bar. The beach offers a large bathing enclosure where guests can safely swim, snorkel, or paddle around in a kayak. Also available for hire here are windsurfing boards and three catamarans. There is a choice of restaurants, including the Calheta buffet restaurant, and Onda Azul, a traditional Madeiran restaurant cooking meat dishes and fresh fish bought from the harbour next door. Multilingual staff on the 24-hour front desk can arrange currency exchange and advise on local sightseeing opportunities. Guests can also use complimentary Internet to plan days out or to keep in touch with friends. Guests can explore the many hiking trails in the area including the local levadas (canals and aquaducts) which begin 500 metres from the resort, and bicycles are available to hire from the hotel. Funchal Airport is 35 kilometres away, around 45 minutes by car.
